Sebastian was letting go of his chaotic day avoiding fishing boats – humans were so nosy and if they caught even a glimpse of his tail, the number of humans on the water would exponentially increase and his species would be endangered. Hiding was exhausting but leaving everything behind at the end of each day was what he needed

He swam just under the surface of the water, the sunlight creating iridiscent ripples across his tail scales, his midnight hair flowing flawlessly about his face like some kind of dark halo. For such a short amount of time each day, he was a free creature even from himself.

It was quiet, eerily so, and the loneliness that was created with the sight of the deep blue wide expanse that surrounded Sebastian was echoed within him, taking the form of an ache, a yearning for something that he could not name. All he knew was that he felt it with every fibre of his being.

It gains the more it gives
And then it rises with the fall

As Sebastian focused on the feeling deep within him, it increased, so much so that he failed to notice you approaching him at first. Finally, a reflection from your scales caught his peripheral vision and he spun around in the direction you were heading from, his breath catching as your hair flowed around your face like a crown, your tail coming beneath you as you effectively stood, treading water just beneath the surface, close to Sebastian but not close enough to touch.

He quirked an eyebrow, but smiled. “I’m Sebastian Michaelis.”

You smiled, cautious but your own loneliness being at such a height that you felt the need to say hello in return. 

“Y/N. Where are you from?”

Sebastian gestured behind him, he had not yet headed back home. “Around. And you?”

You nodded. “The same.”

And so struck up a friendship so healthy, so familiar, that neither of you ever wanted to go back to how you had lived before: alone, always alone. You swam together, you played together; teasing humans by jumping out of the water late at night, so late that any spectators would come to brush it off as a daydream by the morning.

You were no longer cautious. Sebastian was your friend, your only friend, and you were his. Life ceased to matter when you got to collide with one another at the end of each day, the nights were yours to live as you pleased.

As time passed, tales of two mermaids being sighted just off the North Sea became well known and sightings became more common as both of you came to care less about humans and their ways. Some even considered you an omen for love, and if they were right, who were you to say?
